University NetID Services: How to get a NetID

NetIDs are generated based on information in the University's core business systems: GMSs (human resources), Banner and Talisma (the student systems), the alumni database, the Sponsored University Associates system and the GUH HR system. To have a NetID, you must be present in at least one of those systems.

Who do I contact to get a NetID?

NetIDs are generated automatically for every employee, student and alumnus active in one of the systems above. If you don't know how to get someone entered in one of these core systems, or if you have questions about the process, contact the appropriate office below.

Employees / Affiliates

Submit GMS paperwork through your department's administrative manager.  If paperwork has been submitted, you can check the online directory from campus each morning to see if your NetID has been created.

Students

Active, registered students can refer to the online directory while on campus to see their NetID.  From other locations write netid @ georgetown.edu to get your NetID.

Incoming students can contact netid @ georgetown.edu to find out what your NetID is, but passwords are created by the Registrar's Office and sent by postal mail to the address on file.  Go to the password information page for more information.

Inactive students, students with financial holds
Contact the Registrar's office for your campus
Main: 202-687-4020
GUMC: 202-687-1856

Alumni

Alumni with no other active affiliation can go to
https://limited.georgetown.edu/alum/claimid.wb?TYPE=C1 to enter their registration number to generate a NetID or call the Office of Alumni and University Relations, Alumni Records at 202-687-1994.

Associates

When a NetID is created for an Associate, it is sent by email to the address on file in the SUA system.  By default, Associates are not visible in the on-line directory.

Who do I contact if I need additional assistance or escalation with a NetID issue?

If you need help navigating the administrative process to get a NetID generated, please contact the NetID Office at netid@georgetown.edu or 202-687-2999.

The paperwork's done... when will my NetID be created?

NetIDs are generated during the night after the information has been entered into a core business application. For example, if your complete information is entered into GMS at 3:00pm on Monday, your NetID will be generated that night and will be published in the online directory Tuesday morning. You can find your NetID by checking the online directory.

The hiring paperwork's almost done... can the NetID be created now anyway?

If a NetID is needed for a new employee before the paperwork can be entirely complete, it may be possible for a record to be created in GMS based on certain minimal information.  Check with your department's HR Contact.

How can I get electronic services now for faculty who won't start for several months?

Sometimes a faculty member accepts an appointment in the spring to teach in the fall, but wishes to begin preparing coursework or communicating with colleagues using Georgetown's e-mail system. It may be possible for the faculty member to be entered in GMS.  Please contact your Dean's office for assistance.

Our new hire doesn't have a social security number... what do I do?

Social security numbers are required for entry in Genesys.  If a new hire is not a US citizen but will be paid, s/he must apply for a social security number from the Social Security Administration before s/he can be entered into Genesys

If the person will not be paid, having them entered into the Sponsored Univeristy Associates system--which does not require SSNs--may be the best option.

I have a contractor starting in my office... can she get a NetID?

Sponsored Univeristy Associates system is the home for University contractors.  Information about Associates is available through the links at the left.
