Frequently Asked Questions

Why would it be beneficial for my department to get one of the managed hosting services? (How do these services compare to comparable/similar services---i.e., if I stored the data myself?)

There are numerous advantages/benefits to using UIS managed hosting services.

Do I have to buy any special equipment?

Depending on the service you are requesting and your needs, it may be necessary to buy or lease additional equipment, such as server space or storage space.

How secure would data be on a managed hosting server (using a managed hosting service)?

UIS follows the most up-to-date industry standards and practices, as well as university security policies, to ensure that data is protected and secure.

How can I (or my department or research project) sign up for a managed hosting service?

Just complete a request for the managed hosting service you're interested in. (See that managed services' Web page for details.)

UIS will review your request once we receive your completed request form. We will then schedule a consultation with you to develop a managed hosting solution for you based on your needs and requirements.

How does one qualify to get any of these services? Can individuals (i.e., faculty members, researchers), get a managed hosting service? Who is eligible to sign up?

Any current staff or faculty member can request a managed hosting service. For example, a department head or dean can request a service for their program/department, or a researcher can request a service for their research project.

Can anyone (or anyone in a department) request a managed hosting service?

Any current staff or faculty member can request a managed hosting service. For example, a department head or dean can request a service for their program/department, or a researcher can request a service for their research project.

How long does it take for UIS to set up a managed hosting service for my department)?

The time it takes to set up a managed hosting service depends on your needs and requirements. We consult with you to determine your needs, and set up the managed hosting service for you as quickly as possible based on this consultation, taking into account equipment ordering times, staff resources assigned to the service, etc.

Can I access my data remotely (off campus)?

You, or other designated persons, can access your data both from on campus or off campus (remotely).

How does UIS manage my data?

UIS stores and manages your data on servers located at one of our secure data centers. UIS staff maintain the data centers 24 x 7 x 365.

Is access to the data (stored on the managed hosting server) restricted?

UIS can restrict access to your data based on the type of data and your requirements. If sensitive data is involved, you may need to follow department or grant requirements for proper access to such data.

My department/research project already has a GUShare departmental space (and/or Phoenix space). How is managed hosting different from these storage options?

Both of the above do provide storage space on a server that you can access at any time.

However, with the Enterprise Storage service, you will have even more flexibility with storage space: the storage can be scaled to meet your needs and requirements.

Also, UIS can (if you choose) maintain the space for you---your data will be backed up (daily) and archived, and access restricted per your request, and your data housed in one of UIS's secure data centers. And you can choose to lease/rent a dedicated server to which you would have exclusive access.

I'm a researcher; what would happen to my data if there's a gap in my funding?

There will never be any circumstance where UIS would put research data in jeopardy. If there is a lapse in funding or some other interruption in the business aspect of this service, we will work with the existing research team and medical center management to determine the best course of action for dealing with the data. For example, we could either transferr it to an alternative storage mechanism or work out some other way of funding the storage until grant funding becomes available again. In any case, we will work with you to find the appropriate solution.
