Georgetown WiFi Services

Georgetown WiFi Services provides over-the-air access to the university computing network and the Internet; data is transmitted over radio waves between your computer and special access points.

Georgetown WiFi Services eliminates the need for data jacks and cables, allowing for truly mobile computing.

All members of the university community, including students, faculty, staff, and other affiliates, as well as visitors, can use Georgetown Wireless Services. No special accounts or provisioning are required. Individual users or departments may need to purchase 802.11b or 802.11n-compatible wireless cards for devices.

The Georgetown Wireless Services wireless networks are currently available inside and outside campus buildings both on and off campus. Although you may be able to connect in other locations, access to Georgetown Wireless Services is not guaranteed or supported outside of the areas where UIS provides service.

Georgetown WiFi Networks

SaxaNet

SaxaNet is Georgetown University's secure wireless network, which means any data you transmit over wireless will be encrypted between the computer and the wireless connection.

Current Georgetown students, faculty, staff, and other affiliates can connect to SaxaNet. To connect to SaxaNet, you will need to authenticate with your NetID and password.

GuestNet

GuestNet provides Internet access for visitors, and for other users without NetIDs. The network is also available to current Georgetown students, faculty, staff, and other affiliates.

GuestNet permits access to the Internet only. In order to access Georgetown online services (e.g., Georgetown Google Mail, Box, Blackboard), use SaxaNet.

GU_Visitor

GU_Visitor provides Internet access for visitors at off-campus locations, and for other users without NetIDs. The network is also available to current Georgetown students, faculty, staff, and other affiliates.

GU_Visitor permits access to the Internet only. In order to access Georgetown online services (e.g., Georgetown Google Mail, Box, Blackboard), use SaxaNet.

GU_Visitor is password-protected. Users who wish to connect to GU_Visitor should contact an administrative assistant in covered areas for login information.

Eduroam

Georgetown is a member of the Eduroam network, which is comprised of US and international higher education and research institutions.

Access to the Eduroam network is available to visiting students, faculty, and staff from higher education and research institutions that are part of the Eduroam network.

Supporting Georgetown WiFi Services

Georgetown WiFi Services supports any device that complies with the 802.11b or 802.11n standard. Although many operating systems and client applications can be used to configure and connect with a wireless device, UIS currently only provides support for Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Mac OS X (10.6 through 10.10). UIS will also provide "best effort" support for other devices, such as smartphones (i.e., iPhone) and other handheld devices. Step-by-step setup instructions are available for the above operating systems.
