GU Apps: Configuring iPhone for GUMail

Before You Begin

Before you can setup your GUMail Faculty/Staff account on your iPhone, be sure you are connected to a wireless network or in an area with good mobile phone coverage.

  1. On the home screen, tap the Settings icon.

  2. Scroll down and tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

Do you have separate menu items for Mail, Calendar, and Contacts? You are running iPhone 1.0. The new iPhone 2.0 software is available for free from Apple. Just sync your iPhone using iTunes while your computer is connected to the Internet.

  3. Tap Add Account... On the next screen, tap Other.

  4. In the "New Account" screen, enter:

    • Name: your own name
    • Address: your @georgetown.edu e-mail address
    • Password: your NetID password
    • Description: GUMail or some other descriptive name for the account.

  5. Tap the Save button. The iPhone will attempt to complete the configuration automatically. Wait for it to finish, then continue.

  6. Tap the IMAP button at the top of the screen. In the "Incoming Mail Server" section, enter:

    • Host Name: gumail.georgetown.edu
    • User Name: your own NetID

  7. In the "Outgoing Mail Server" section, enter:

    • Host Name: smtp.georgetown.edu
    • User Name: your own NetID
    • Password: your NetID password

  8. Tap the Save button. This will bring you back to the "Mail, Contacts, Calendar" screen.

  9. In the "Accounts" list, tap GUMail or the name you gave your account in step 4.

  10. Scroll down to the "Outgoing Mail Server" section and tap SMTP.

  11. Tap smtp.georgetown.edu.

  12. At the bottom of the screen, change the Server Port to 587.

  13. Tap the menu arrows at the top-left of the screen until you are back the main "Settings" screen.
