Remote Desktop ConnectionRemote Desktop Connection (RDC) gives users the ability to login to a networked computer from remote locations such as home, the airport or a hotel. Upon login, users will see the exact same desktop features as if they were in the office using the networked computer directly. RDC is a viable solution for university staff who have desktops and require a telecommute work option. *It is not a solution for staff who work with Personally Identifying Information (PII) or Protected Health Information (PHI). For a complete list of this type of data, visit the University Information Security Office Web site. When do I need RDC?If you normally use a desktop computer at work and need to seamlessly duplicate your work environment at home, you need RDC. RDC will allow you to view your desktop and access files on your hard drive, essentially allowing you to work the same way you always have in your home environment.
Can I use RDC if I work with confidential data?If you work with Personally Identifying Information or Protected Health Information (e.g., you receive or download extracts or files containing SSNs, credit cards, bank routing numbers, highly confidential donor data; your office is a HIPAA-covered entity) please contact the UIS Help Desk as you will need to use a secure, encrypted laptop. UIS can provide a temporary secure, encrypted laptop for you while your department's purchase is being expedited.
Can I print from my home computer to my office printer using RDC?No. RDC only allows users to connect to the files and folders on their networked computer and view the screen.
What do I need in order to use RDC?In order to use RDC, you will need to adhere to the requirements listed below. Technology Requirements
Do I need to worry about protecting my home computer from viruses or other cyber threats while using RDC?Yes. Even though you are using your own computer with RDC, you are connecting to your work computer therefore, any threats that affect your home computer can affect your work computer. Ensure that your home computer has antivirus software loaded on it and that you apply the latest security patches. Find out more about how to protect your computer on the University Information Security Office Web site.
RDC Use for H1N1 Emergency PreparednessIf you have to telecommute because of the H1N1 flu, UIS will enable you to remotely connect to your office desktop using RDC with Georgetown Safeconnect from your home computer. This exception is not a long-term alternative to acquiring a university-managed laptop to support ongoing teleworking arrangements. This option and process may take several business days to resolve and should only be used for H1N1 teleworking situations, not casual or occasional work.
For additional information regarding RDC, contact the UIS Help Desk.
*University staff who work with PII or PHI must use secure, encrypted laptops. Visit the UIS Web site for information on how to purchase this computer. |
