Your Path to Being "Green"
There is a lot that you can do to support IT sustainability efforts on campus and around the world! It does not take much, and every bit you do will go a long way towards engaging in environmentally-sustainable practices. You may even be able to help others in the process.
- Use less energy.
- Switch it off! Turn off your computer or put it in "hibernate" mode when it's not in use. You'll be amazed at how much energy you can save!
- Unplug electronic appliances, even when you turn them off. Many electronic appliances continue to draw small amounts of power when they're switched off. You can also plug your appliances into a power strip, and then just switch off the power strip to cut off electricity to all your appliances.
- Unplug battery chargers when the battery is fully charged or when you're not using the charger.
- Use the power management features on your computer. For example, instead of using your computer's screen saver, have your computer switch automatically to "hibernate" mode when you're not using it----or better yet, just turn it off!
- Purchase a computer with "green" in mind and save the green in your wallet! Look for the ENERGY STAR label on computers. This label, which appears on most new computers, is the government's seal of energy efficiency.
- Consider buying a laptop computer. Laptops use less energy than desktop computers.
- Recycle your old computer
- Don't print! Share documents that do not contain confidential data via GUShare (faculty and staff only), Blackboard or e-mail if possible. If you have to print, use the double-sided option and print on recycled paper.
Here's a tip!
Did you know that when you buy "green" or support sustainability efforts you can actually save money! You can save $46 per year by just putting your computer to "sleep" or in standby mode for 12 hours each day. Visit GreenerChoices.org for more information about how to save money by going "green."
