UIS "Green" EffortsComputer Recycling ProgramComputers and some other small electronics are federally regulated hazardous waste. Special handling and documentation is required for disposal of these items. Georgetown's Office of Recycling will pick up your computers and other small office machines that are in working condition for donation to various charities. Non-working computers are sent to a federal facility for proper deconstruction and disposal. Any office or individual wishing to dispose of a computer will need to first, contact the UIS Help Desk to obtain assistance in cleaning the computer's hard drive. The next step is to contact the Recycling Office at 202-687-3432 to arrange a pick up. Visit the Recycling Office's website for more information.
PrintingDon't print! UIS encourages departments to reduce printing. Instead of printing documents, use GUShare (faculty and staff only), Blackboard or e-mail to share documents that do not contain confidential data. If you have to print, choose the double-sided print option to reduce the use of paper, and use recycled paper for printing purposes.
Hardware and Software PurchasingUIS selects only energy-efficient computers for the university's contracts with Dell and Apple. UIS also encourages users to download software purchases or utilize the vast software library available through Hoya Computing in order to reduce material waste.
