General questions

How do I request a GUMail account?

You already have a GUMail account if you are taking class for credit, or are a faculty, staff, or AAP member.  Your account will be activated the first time a message is sent to it.  To begin using your account, follow the steps on the GUMail homepage under Getting Started with GUMail.

What is my e-mail address?

Your e-mail address is <yournetid>@georgetown.edu.  So if your NetID is xy23, your e-mail address is xy23@georgetown.edu.

What is my e-mail quota (How large is my mailbox)?

Faculty, staff, and AAPs have 50 MB quotas; students have 20 MB quotas.

What can I do to keep from reaching my quota?  What if I have already exhausted my quota?

Instructions for managing your e-mail space are available on the GUMail: Quota & Space Management page.

What is the size limit on a single e-mail message?

The largest message (size of the message plus any and all attachments)you can send or receive via GUMail is 12 MB.

Problems sending e-mail

I'm having trouble sending e-mail with my client.  My client stops or times out.  What can I do?

You may need to change your e-mail client's port.  Certain clients cannot use the standard port (port 25) for sending e-mail, or (if you're off-campus) your Internet Service Provider may be blocking outgoing e-mail traffic that doesn't go through its own e-mail server.

You can check which ports your e-mail client is compatible with at the Alternate Ports for Sending E-mail page.  Consult the instructions for your particular client to see how to set the port number.

Remote (Off-campus) Access to E-mail

How do I access my e-mail when I'm off-campus?

You have several options for accessing your e-mail remotely.  You can dial into GU Express to use the Internet, or you can obtain service from an Internet Service Provider.  Please visit the remote access page for details.

Once you have an Internet connection, you can either read your e-mail through an e-mail client or through GUMail Messenger Express.  Please visit the How to Choose an E-mail Client page for details.
