How to use Thunderbird with GUMail: Excluding Your Local Mail from AntiVirus Scans

Step I: Print a copy of your local mail settings

  1. Open Thunderbird.

  1. Click on Tools, then click on Account Settings....
  1. This will bring up the Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings window; click on Local Folders.

  1. Under Local directory, use your mouse to highlight the entire line of text, then right-click on the highlighted text.
  1. This will bring up a menu; click on Copy.

  1. Close this window and open Microsoft Word.
  1. Open a new document, click on Edit, then click on Paste.

  1. Print your document (you will need a printed copy for the next step).

Step II: Change the settings for manual scans

  1. Open Symantec AntiVirus (you can do this by clicking on the Shield icon in the lower right-hand corner of your screen).
  1. Click on Scan Computer, then click on the Options button.
  1. Click on Exclude files and folders, then click on the Exclusions button.
  1. Click on the Files/Folders button.
  1. Now it's time to use your printout as a sort of road map. Click on the little plus sign (+) next to each item on your list.

  1. Keep doing this until you get to your Local Folder.

  1. Click on the empty box beside your Local Folder (this will put a + and a check mark in the box, and plus signs in some of the boxes above it.)

  1. Click on the OK button.

  1. Click on the OK button.
  1. Click on the OK button again.

Part III: Change the settings for scheduled scans

If you have scheduled scans to run automatically, you will have to exclude your local mail from these scans as well. If haven't set the program to run automatic scans, you can skip this step.

  1. Click on the little plus sign (+) next to Scheduled Scans, then click on your scheduled scan (in this example, the program has been set to run a weekly scan).

  1. Click on the Edit button.
  1. Click on the Options button, then follow the instructions you used to exclude your folder from manual scans.

Step III: Make certain that auto-protect file protection is active

  1. In Symantec AntiVirus, click on Configure, then click on File System Auto-Protect.
  1. Make sure there is a checkmark beside Enable Auto-Protect.

  1. Click on the OK button.
  1. You can now safely restore your local mail folder.
