How to use Thunderbird with GUMail: Setting Up GUMail Spam Filters

Setting Up Spam Filter Settings

  1. Open Thunderbird.
  2. Select Junk Mail Controls from the Tools menu.

  1. Select your account name from the Configure Junk Mail Settings for drop-down list located at the top of the window.

(Note:  The account name will likely be GUMail, netid @ georgetown.edu, or imap.georgetown.edu.)

  1. Click on the Settings tab.
  2. Click on the check box next to When I manually mark messages as Junk so that a check mark appears.
  3. Verify that a dot appears next to Move them to the "Junk" folder.
  4. Click OK.
 

Setting Up Additional Thunderbird Spam Filters

  1. Select Message Filters from the Tools menu.

  1. Click on the New button.

  1. Click on the down-arrow next to Subject and then select Customize from the drop-down list.

  1. Enter X-GU-Spam in the text box under New message header.
  2. Click on the Add button.

X-GU-Spam will be listed in the other text box.

  1. Click OK.

  1. Enter GUSpam in the Filter name text box.
  2. In the area just below For incoming messages that, select X-GU-Spam from the leftmost drop-down list.
  3. Enter Suspect in the blank text box to the far right of X-GU-Spam.

  1. Click on the plus sign (+) button to the right of Suspect. A second row of fields is displayed.
  1. Make sure X-GU-Spam is selected from the leftmost drop-down list.
  2. Type Positive in the blank text box to the far right of X-GU-Spam.
  1. In the area just below Perform these actions, click on the down arrow on the right to display your mail folders and then select Junk. Depending on your account name, Junk on your_netid @ georgetown.edu or Junk on imap.georgetown.edu will then be displayed.
  2. Click OK.

The GUSpam filters are now in your mail filters list and are enabled.

  1. Close the Message Filters window by clicking on the X (for Windows) or dot (for Mac) at the top right of the window.
