How to use Thunderbird with GUMail: Using Filters

What are filters?

Ever wish that all the mail sent from your friends would automatically go to a special folder called "Friends," or all the mail from your boss would go to the trash? Well, if you want to make these things happen, you can! Filters can process your incoming messages in several useful ways; you just have to learn how to use them.

Before you begin using filters, you should have a general idea about how they work, and be familiar with some of their limitations:

  • Filters created in Thunderbird only work with Thunderbird; they do not work with Eudora, Outlook, or other e-mail programs. Your filters will not work while Thunderbird is not running.

  • Filters will only work on the computer where you originally created them. If you check your mail from a computer that doesn't have your filters saved on it, all new incoming messages will arrive in your Inbox (they will not be processed according to your filters).

  • If you are running Thunderbird on two computers with the same filters at the same time, you may get two copies of each e-mail that arrives.
