How to Use Thunderbird 3: Deleting Messages
Moving Messages to the Trash Folder
Messages you delete from your Inbox or other mail folder will be moved to your Trash folder. Those messages will continue to take up storage space on your GUMail account until you permanently delete those messages.
- In Thunderbird, go to the folder in which you want to delete messages.
- Select the messages you want to delete.
- To select one message, click on the message listing.
- To select more than one message, hold down the Ctrl key as you click on each message, and then release the Ctrl key when you're done selecting messages.
Note: If you select multiple messages to delete, Thunderbird will display snippets of your selected messages in the message pane. Thunderbird will also label the selected messages "conversations", as shown in the example below. (A conversation listing in the message pane displays the message subject, author, snippet of the message text, and link to the full message.)
- Click on the Delete button located at the far right hand corner of the message pane.

After you move the messages to your Trash folder, you can then permanently delete those messages.
Permanently Deleting Messages
Important: When you empty your Trash folder, your messages will be deleted forever and cannot be retrieved. So be sure you want to permanently a message before you do so.
Any messages you don't delete permanently will continue to remain in your e-mail account an take up storage space towards your quota.
To permanently delete messages, perform the following:
- Click on the plus sign icon next to your Trash folder listing.
- Right-click on the account name of your GUMail account (should be in the form "yourNetID@georgetown.edu"), and then select Empty Trash from the drop-down menu.
- Click on the Yes button in the following confirmation pop-up window to proceed.
