How to Use Microsoft Outlook 2007: Setting up Outlook 2007 for GUMail

 

  1. Select Account Settings from the Tools menu.





  2. In the Account Settings window, make sure the E-mail tab is selected.
  3. In the E-mail tab, click on the New button.




  4. In the Add New E-mail Account---Auto Account Setup window, perform the following:
    1. Enter your full name in the Your Name field.
    2. Enter your Georgetown e-mail address in the E-mail Address field.
    3. Enter your NetID password in the Password field, and then enter it again in the Retype Password field to confirm.
    4. Select the option Manually configure server settings or additional server types (the fields you completed will then be grayed out, as shown in the example below).
    5. Click on the Next button.



  1. In the Add New E-mail Account---Choose E-mail Service window, select Internet E-mail and then click on the Next button.




  2. In the Add New E-mail Account---Internet E-mail Settings window, perform the following:
    1. Enter your full name in the Your Name field. (In the example below, "Jane Hoya" is the name entered.)
    2. Enter your Georgetown e-mail address in the E-mail Address field. (In the example below, "jhoya@georgetown.edu is the e-mail address entered.)
    3. Select IMAP for the Account Type.
    4. Enter gumail.georgetown.edu in the Incoming mail server field.
    5. Enter smtp.georgetown.edu in the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field.
    6. Enter your NetID in the User Name field. (NoteYour NetID may have already been filled in.)
    7. Deselect the option Remember Password (the Password field will be grayed out).



  1. Click on the More Settings button.
  2. Click on the Outgoing Server tab and then select the option My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication. Make sure the option Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.





  3. Click on the Advanced tab, and then perform the following:
    1. Select SSL as the encryption type for the IMAP server. (The corresponding number should be changed automatically to 993.)
    2. Select TLS as the encryption type for the SMTP server. (The corresponding number should be changed automatically to 25.)
    3. Click OK when you’re done.



  1. In the Internet E-mail Account Settings window, click on the Test Account Settings button to check that your settings are correct.





  2. At the following prompt, enter your NetID and password and then click OK.




    If the settings are correct, you will see the following message:




    "Send test e-mail message" means that Outlook has sent a test e-mail message to your GUMail account. Microsoft Office Outlook Test Message appears in the subject line.

    If any settings are incorrect (i.e., if Outlook couldn't send out the test message), you will receive a message box similar to the one shown below. Click on the Errors tab for details. (Note: Feel free to call the UIS Help Desk at 202-687-4949 if you receive an error.)




  3. Click on the Close button.
  4. Click on the Next button in the Internet E-mail Settings window.
  5. Click on the Finish button in the following window to complete the account setup.





  6. Enter your password again (your NetID will be displayed automatically) in the following login prompt, and then click on the OK button.




  7. Your new e-mail account profile will be listed in the Account Settings---E-mail Accounts window.




  8. Click on the Close button. Your Inbox and associated e-mail messages will be displayed.
  9. Set up Outlook to work with the Georgetown Directory. If you don't set up the directory, you will have to manually enter all your e-mail addresses (the Georgetown Directory can fill in a Georgetown e-mail address in for you automatically as you type in the address.)


You're now ready to start using Outlook 2007.
