HOW TO USE GUMAIL WITH OUTLOOK 2003

Recommended Use: This profile is recommended for those who want to use MS Outlook 2003 for GUMail. 

Calendar Use:  If you'd also like to use Microsoft Outlook to access your GUCalender, please do not use the following directions. Instead, visit this page for step-by-step instructions.  


MS Outlook 2003 - Creating a GUMail profile 

  1. Launch MS Outlook 2003.
  2. When in Outlook, select About Microsoft Office Outlook from the Help menu.

     

  3. In the About Microsoft Office Outlook window, make sure "SP3" is displayed, as shown in the following screen image:

 

  • If you see "SP3", Outlook 2003 is configured to send mail in compliance with the GUMail security policies.

  • If you don't see "SP3", please call the UIS Help Desk at (202) 687-4949 for detailed configuration instructions.

 

  1. Click on the OK button to close the window.
  1. Click on Tools. This will bring up a menu. Click on E-mail Accounts.

 

 
  1. The E-mail Accounts window will appear. 
 
  1. Click on Add a new e-mail account, then click on the Next button.
     

 

 
  1. Click on IMAP, then click on the Next button.
 
  1. The Internet E-mail Settings window will come up. Fill in the following information:
 

  • Next to Your Name, type your full name as you want it to appear in outgoing messages. 
  • Next to E-mail Address, type your e-mail address (your NetID followed by @georgetown.edu).
  • Next to Incoming mail server (IMAP):
    • If you are a faculty or staff member, type gumail.georgetown.edu.
  • Next to Outgoing mail server (SMTP), type smtp.georgetown.edu.
  1. Make sure there is no checkmark next to Remember password, then click on the More Settings button.
 
  1. Click on the Outgoing Server tab.

 

  1. Click on My outgoing server requires authentication.

Note: A dot should appear beside the option Use same settings as my incoming mail server.

 

  1. Click on the Advanced tab.
 
  1. Under Incoming server, click on This server requires a secure connection (SSL).

Note: The number should change to 993.

  1. Under Outgoing server, click on This server requires a secure connection (SSL).

 

  1. Then click on the OK button.
 
  1. This will take you back to the Internet E-mail Settings window. Click on the Next button, then click on the Finish button in the window that comes up.
 
  1. Outlook will automatically try to connect to your mailbox. This may take a few seconds.

 

  1. When the log-in window comes up, type your University NetID and password.

 

  1. This will bring up your GUMail inbox.
