WORKING OFFLINE IN NETSCAPE 7: SETTING PREFERENCES

Sometimes (especially when using GUExpress), you may wish to do most of your work offline and connect to the Internet only when you are ready to send or get mail, or update your files. Netscape 7 includes a synchronizing feature that makes this very easy.

Synchronizing allows you to download email folders you might need while working offline. The instructions below will show you how to define which folders you want synchronized. If you don't want to download an entire folder, you can make individual e-mail files available for offline use, and move into offline mode. By working in offline mode, you won't need to worry about your connection expiring. You can reconnect whenever you are ready.

  1. Start Netscape 7 Mail.

  1. Click on Edit, then click on Folder Properties....
  1. This will bring up the Preferences window.

  1. Click on Offline & Disk Space (it's on the left-hand side). This will bring up the Offline & Disk Space information in the right-hand side.

  1. Make sure that there are dots beside Ask me if I want to send my unsent messages and Ask me if I want to download messages for offline use, then click on the OK button.
  1. Click on Edit, then click on Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings....
  1. Look at the left-hand side of the window. If there are no items visible under imap@georgetown.edu, click on the little triangle beside it. Click on Offline & Disk Space. This will bring up the Offline & Disk Space information on the right.

  1. If you want to automatically download messages from your Inbox when you go offline, make sure there is a checkmark beside Make the messages in my Inbox available when I am working offline.
  1. If you want to download messages from other folders when you go offline, click on the Select button.
  1. You will now see the Select Items for Download window.
  1. Click on the boxes beside any folders you want to download (checkmarks should appear in the boxes).
  1. Then click on the OK button. This will take you back to the Download window; click on the OK button to close the Download window.

You have now set your preferences for synchronization, see Making Files Available Offline.
