HOW TO USE MOZILLA WITH GUMAIL: USING THE JUNK MAIL FILTER

Mozilla Mail comes with a built-in filter that will help you sort out junk mail. The rule will look for messages that appear to be junk mail. When it finds one, it will place a special icon beside the message. You will then "train" the junk mail filter by telling it whether or not the flagged message is really junk. The more you train the junk mail rule, the better it will get at detecting junk mail. When it is "well trained," you can set it to automatically move junk mail to a special junk folder.

  1. Start Mozilla Mail program, click on Tools (at the top of the screen), then click on Junk Mail Controls....

  1. This will bring up the Junk Mail Controls window.
  1. Click on Enable junk mail controls.

  1. Click on Do not mark messages as junk if the sender is in my address book.

  1. Click on When I manually mark messages as Junk and Move them to the "Junk" folder.

  1. Then click on the OK button.
  1. When the junk mail rule thinks that a message is junk, it will flag the message with a special icon.
  1. If the junk mail rule is wrong (and the message is not really junk mail), click on the message to highlight it. Then click on the Not Junk icon.
  1. If you get a message that is junk, but the rule has not noticed it (has not flagged it), click on the message, then click on the Junk icon.
  1. When the rule is consistently identifying junk mail correctly, you can have it move the messages automatically.

  1. Open the Junk Mail Control window (as in step 1, above).

  1. Click on Move incoming messages determined to be junk to:.

  1. UIS recommends sending these messages to the Junk folder. Check this folder regularly to make sure nothing has been placed here by mistake. To avoid deleting misidentified mail, do not send junk directly to the trash.

  1. Click on the OK button.
