GUMail: How to install GUMail on Windows Mobile 2005 (Pocket PC)

These instructions apply to all handheld devices that use

Account setup

Begin the account setup process.

Select START-MESSAGING,

then select

MENU - TOOLS - NEW ACCOUNT

E-mail address

Enter your GUMail e-mail address.

Auto configuration

The device will attampt to auto-configure your e-mail account. GUMail does not use this feature.

Your name

Enter your name as it appears on your GUMail account.

Enter your NetID, which is also the first part of your Georgetown email address that appears before the at sign (@).

This stores your password on the device, so that you do not need to enter it each time you connect to get new e-mail messages.

Note that if you lose your device, someone else may gain access to your e-mail account.

Account type

The type of e-mail server that hosts your mailbox.  Choose from POP3 or IMAP4. GUMail is IMAP4.

Enter a name for this account. Choose a different name for each account that you setup.

Enter the name of your incoming e-mail server.

Allows you to enter options for advanced account features.

Connect and check for messages every XX minutes

This is the frequency of when your device will contact the wireless network to 'pull' new email messages. It is recommended to use a setting above 5 minutes.

Select INTERNET from the drop down menu. This is your GPRS wireless internet connection or your 802.11b WiFi connection.

Only display messages from the last XX days

This setting prevents your entire INBOX from being dumped onto the handheld.

The handheld INBOX will not show messages from your GUMail INBOX that are older than XX days.

It is recommended that you choose a number between 7 and 14 days.

Require SSL connection

GUMail stays secure by utilizing SSL connections. An SSL connection enables you to send information more securely.

Outgoing mail requires authentication

Your outgoing e-mail server (SMTP) may require authentication.

If checked, the same user name and password from the incoming server entry above will be used.

Get Message Headers Only or Get Full Copy of Messages

Get Message Headers Only pulls the message headers instead of the complete message. This allow you to choose which messages to read after reviewing the sender, subject, and date.

Get Message Headers Only is best to use when you receive an abundance of spam, or most of your e-mail messages are large, or you do not have much storage space on your handheld.

Get Full Copy pulls the complete message on the handheld each time it checks for new messages.

This one is tricky.

Place a check next to Include,

 and enter 333K.

Then select

from the drop down list.

This is the maximum email attachment size that the handheld will automatically download.

Place a check next to When getting full copy, get attachments

Optional -
subscribe to SENT ITEMS folder

Messages that are sent from your handheld do not get copied to the GUMail SENT folder. Instead, they are placed in a folder called SENT ITEMS that is stored on the handheld. You must subscribe to this folder to see a copy of messages that are sent from the handheld.

Select MENU - TOOLS - MANAGE FOLDERS - Scroll to the folder you want to view on the handheld SENT ITEMS and place a check mark next to the folder. Select OK to continue.

Optional - subscribe to GUMail folders

After your account is setup, you can access folders other than your GUMail INBOX by subscribing to the folder. For example, you may want to see your GUMail SENT folder on the handheld. Select TOOLS-MANAGE FOLDERS, then select the folders you want to see on the handheld. Remember that you will only see messages from the past XX days as entered in an earlier step.

Select MENU - TOOLS - MANAGE FOLDERS - Scroll to the folder you want to view on the handheld SENT and place a check mark next to the folder. Select OK to continue.
