GUMAIL: How to Install an E-mail Software ClientUse the Recommended E-Mail Clients: Each software client listed below has been tested to work with the GUMail service. UIS provides extended documentation, training, and support for the software listed below. UIS provides a limited set of documentation and resources for other e-mail clients.
Recommended E-mail Clients by Computer Type
Offers access to your e-mail from any computer with a web browser on campus, at home and beyond. It provides the capability to read your e-mail in languages other than English. Not only is there no cost; it is easy, quick, and accessible. UIS offers extended support, documentation, and training classes for GUMail Messenger Express. Note that your full name will be shown in the 'from' address when you send from GUMail Messenger Express; this feature cannot be changed.
Thunderbird is widely distributed on campus computers. It is a free and easy to use desktop client. UIS offers extended support, online documentation, and training classes for Thunderbird. Thunderbird features include Local Folders that allow you to store your e-mail mesages locally on your computer; Filtering allows you to move your messages to special folders without reading them; Junk Filtering allows you to identify senders as 'spammers' and automatically moves your incoming messages to spam junk folders; Address Books allow you to save contacts and create distribution lists; Dynamic Addressing allows directory lookup for email addresses in the GU Directory; Spell Checker allows you to spell check your messages before sending. Outlook 2003 offers all of the features of Thunderbird. In addition to GUMail, Outlook 2003 can be configured to use its calendar feature. This feature can be configured to access the GUCalendar service or can be used as a local calendar. Outlook 2003 can be used to synchronize with many handheld devices. UIS offers extended support, documentation, and training classes for Outlook 2003. Note Outlook 2003 is not available to the entire campus community for free, and installation and setup are slighty more difficult.
