Jerry Sobieski will discuss the basics of optical network technologies, the resulting national and international networks and their capabilities, and the applications that love them. He will offer his perspectives on the relevance of these network technologies to the research and education mission of higher education.
Biography
Mr. Sobieski is the Director of Research Initiatives at the Mid-Atlantic Crossroads (MAX) - a consortium of 30 Universities and Federal and private research labs in the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC region. He is a national leader in the development of advanced optical networks and services and is actively involved in many advanced network initiatives both in the US and internationally.
Mr. Sobieski is a member of Technical Advisory Committee for the Internet2 Abilene network, he is part of the engineering design teams for emerging projects such as the Global Lambda Integrated Facility (GLIF) and the Internet2 Hybrid Optical Packet Infrastructure, and is part of the National Research Network Technical Advisory Board for Cisco Systems.
He is Principal Investigator for the Dynamic Resource Allocation over GMPLS Optical Networks (DRAGON) project - a four year National Science Foundation funded advanced experimental network in the Washington, DC region that promises to bring a new generation of network capabilities to globally distributed e-science programs.
