Compatibility Issues with Mac OS X 10.6: (Update 9/22)

Apple recently released the latest version of its Mac OS X operating system, version 10.6 (code named "Snow Leopard"). However, UIS advises against upgrading at this time since some mission-critical applications (core applications for Georgetown University academic and administrative purposes) may not work properly.

UIS will also not install 10.6 on any University-owned Macintosh machines until outstanding issues with the new OS are resolved.

The new OS also works only on Intel Macs, not the older Power PC Macs. In fact, 10.6 will not install on PowerPC Macs at all.

(Note:  Additional applications have been included in the lists below since this article was originally published on September 8. These applications are indicated in bold.)

Applications that will not work properly with Mac OS X 10.6:

  • Adobe Creative Suite (CS) versions 1 and 2
  • Adobe CS3: applications work, though with some minor issue(major issues with some third-party plug-ins)
  • Parallels Desktop 3.0 and older
  • SPSS 17
  • Symantec/Norton AntiVirus 10 and 11
  • Endnote X2 and Endnote X3

Applications that work with Mac OS X 10.6:

  • Adobe Creative Suite (CS) version 4
  • Microsoft Office 2008 (version 12.2.1)
  • Parallels Desktop 4
  • VMWare Fusion 2.0.5
  • Oracle Calendar 9.0.4 (you will need to open using Rosetta)

Please note that the above lists are preliminary. UIS is continuing to test 10.6 in order to cover all Georgetown critical applications. Once UIS is confident that critical applications work satisfactorily with 10.6, we'll approve the installation of 10.6 on University-owned Mac machines. We will continue to keep you updated.
