Issues Found With Internet Explorer 8

UIS has found a number of incompatibility issues between Internet Explorer 8 (IE8), the latest version Microsoft's Web browser, and some Georgetown enterprise Web applications.

UIS is recommending that you wait to install IE8 and continue to use Internet Explorer 7 (IE7).

Although satisfactory for general Web browsing, IE8 has been found to have compatibility issues with GUMail, Banner, Talisma, and the PARCC Tutorial.

UIS is in the process of testing Georgetown enterprise applications so that it can identify any additional incompatibility issues.

Microsoft is distributing IE8 via automatic updates (as a high priority update). If your Windows computer is set to receive Microsoft Windws updates automatically and is running IE6 or IE7, you may be prompted to receive IE8.

UIS has blocked IE8 from installing automatically on Georgetown-owned faculty and staff desktop and laptop computers. However, you still may be offered the option to install IE8 if you manually invoke Windows Update. UIS recommends that you deselect the IE8 update option when performing manual updates.

If you've already installed IE8, you can either continue using it, or uninstall IE8 and roll back to IE7. Please note that if you uninstall IE8, your browser settings and favorites (bookmarks) list will remain intact and not be deleted. Depending on the Web application you're using, you may also want to consider using Firefox.

Contact the UIS Help Desk at 202-687-4949 or help @ georgetown.edu if you have already installed IE8 and are experiencing problems using it with any Georgetown applications. Please also let the Help Desk know if you have installed IE8 and found issues with any application not listed above.
