WHY IS MY NETWORK CONNECTION SLOW?

Our campus network has seen many improvements over the last few months and is now providing us with faster, more stable connections to the Internet than we've ever had before. But several common problems may slow down your connection. Use the troubleshooting steps below if you're experiencing slow network connections.

General troubleshooting steps

  • Check the outage pageand make sure it's not a system-wide problem.
  • Make sure you don't have a bunch of programs running in the background, particularly ones that use an Internet connection. File sharing programs like Limewire and Kazaa can often cause extreme slowness.
  • Run a virus scan. Viruses often run in the background and use up tons of resources.
  • Borrow another cable from somebody and try that out. Bad connections are sometimes caused by old cables that don't work very well.

If the general troubleshooting steps don't solve your problem, and you're using a PC, check the settings of your ethernet card. The card should have its speedset to 10Mbpsand its duplexsetting should be set to Half. (Macs set these things automatically, so you don't have to worry about them.)

Note: If you have the instructions that came with your card, use them! Cards vary greatly depending on the manufacturer; some cards have one setting that encompasses both speed and duplex, some cards use separate settings for each, and some cards can't be set at all. So, if you have the instructions for your particular card (or can find them on the Web), you're best off using them.

  1. Clickon the Startbutton.
  1. Right Clickon My Computer.
  1. Clickon Properties.
  1. Clickon the Hardwaretab.
  1. Then Clickon the Device Managerbutton.
  1. Clickon the Plus signnext to Network Adapters.
  1. Right Clickon your ethernet card. Then Clickon Properties.

  1. Clickon the Advancedtab in the window that comes up (there might not be an advanced tab, in which case you won't be able to change your card's settings).
  1. In the advanced panel there should be a list of settings; unfortunately, the names of the settings will vary from card to card. Look for something like connection type, line speed, or duplex mode. Remember that you're trying to change the speedsetting to 10Mbpsand the duplexsetting to Half.
