How to Use Remote Desktop: Setting up Your Office Computer for Remote Access
You can set up your office computer so that you can access it on your office computer from home or any other remote location where you have Internet access.
Note: The computer you're connecting from must have Georgetown SafeConnect.
- Open the Control Panel.
- In the Control Panel window, double-click on the System icon.

- In the System Properties window:
- Click on the Remote tab.

- In the Remote Desktop area, select the option Allow users to connect remotely to this computer.
- Click on the Select Remote Users button.

- In the Remote Desktop Users window, click on the Add button.
- In the Select Users window, record the alphanumeric name that appears just below From this location (you will need this name later). (In the example below, "UIS-L-BDPJR71" appears.) Click on the Locations button.

- In the Locations window:
- Click on the plus sign icon next to Entire Directory. You'll see mei.georgetown.edu displayed.
- Click on the plus sign icon next to mei.georgetown.edu. You'll see georgetown.mei.georgetown.edu displayed.
- Click on georgetown.mei.georgetown.edu so that it is highlighted.
- Click OK.

You should see georgetown.mei.georgetown.edu displayed in the From this location field.

- Enter the NetID of the person (i.e., yourself) to whom you want to allow remote access on this computer (in the example below, "sdr28" is entered as the NetID), and then click on the Check Names button.

You should see netid@georgetown.mei.georgetown.edu displayed. (In the example below, "sdr28@georgetown.mei.georgetown.edu" is displayed.)

- Click OK. The listing of the person you added should be displayed in the Remote Desktop Users window.

- Click OK in the Remote Desktop Users window.
- Click OK in the System Properties window.
- In the Control Panel, double-click on the Windows Firewall icon.

- In the Windows Firewall window, click on the Exceptions tab.
- In the Exceptions tab, scroll down the Programs and Services list until you see Remote Desktop. Make sure Remote Desktop is selected (a check mark will appear next to it).
- Click on the Remote Desktop listing so that it is highlighted, and then click on the Edit button.

- In the Edit a Service window, click on the Change scope button.

- In the Change Scope window:
- Select the Custom List option (click on the circle next to it so that a dot appears).
- In the Custom List text area, enter 10.206.0.0/255.255.0.0,141.161.168.0/255.255.255.0.
- Click OK.

You should see Custom displayed under the Scope column of the Edit a Service window, as shown below.

- Click OK in the Edit a Service window.
- Click OK in the Windows Firewall window.
You're now ready to access your office computer from home.
