Setting up and using GUExpress on Windows 2000

Part I: Creating a new dial-up connection

If you are not using Windows 2000, use the buttons on the left to choose the operating system you are using.

Once you have created a dial-up connection and connected to Georgetown, you can Launch Netscape Communicator and use the Internet or access your GUMail account just as you would from your office computer. While using GUExpress, you may sometimes find it convenient to work offline.

Creating a new dial-up connection in Windows 2000

Before you begin, make sure the modem you want to use is configured correctly. The proper configuration of your modem depends on its manufacturer and the system you are using. If you've used your modem to connect to the Internet, it should be fine. If you've never used your modem before, check the instruction manuals that came with it.

  1. Click the Start button on your taskbar. Then Click on Settings.
  1. Click on Network and Dial-up Connections.
  1. Click on the Make New Connection icon.
  1. You will now see the first of several Network Connection windows.

  1. Click on the Next button.

  1. Click on Dial-up to private network (a black dot should appear in the circle beside it), then Click on the Next button.

  1. Click on the modem you want to use, then Click on the Next button.

  1. Under Phone number, Type 202-333-5609. Then Click on the Next button.

Note: If you use call waiting, Type *70,202-333-5609. This will disable your call waiting and allow you to connect properly.

  1. Under Name, Type Georgetown University. If you want to create a desktop icon for this connection, Click on the box beside Add a shortcut to my desktop (a checkmark should appear in the box beside it). Click on the Finish button.

You have now created a dial-up connection for GUExpress; see Connecting to Georgetown if you need help connecting to the University network.
