How to use Oracle Calendar: Avoiding Off-line Password Problems

Adding the OFFLINEAB option will prevent Oracle Calendar from checking offline files when you log in. This can be useful on workstations where more than one person logs onto Oracle Calendar and in situations where your NetID password has been changed.

For instance if you change your NetID password, Oracle Calendar will try to authenticate your offline files using your old NetID password. So if you've forgotten your old password you won't be able to log into GUCalendar and you won't be able to change Oracle Calendar so that you can login with your new password. This can be a serious problem. Implementing the following changes can prevent this hassle.

After adding the Offline option, you will notice the following changes in Oracle Calendar:

  • Your Oracle Calendar Address Book will be completely disabled
  • Oracle Calendar will ignore offline files during the login process

  1. First, you need to locate a file named UNISON.INI. Note: Be careful if you are using shared computer that is used by several people. Separate UNISON.INI files are created for each different Oracle Calendar user. Make sure that you are modifying your own particular UNISON.INI file.

  1. UNISON.INI is a system file; if your computer display is not set to show hidden files then you won't be able to find it. Also, the file's extension (.INI) won't show if the display is set to hide extensions of known file types.

  1. To change your computer's display to show hidden files and show file extensions, click on the Start button, then click on My Computer. This will open the My Computer window.

  1. Click on Tools located in the top toolbar. Then click on Folder Options.

  1. The Folder Options window will open.

  1. Click on the second tab from the right, View.

  1. Under the heading Hidden files and folders, make sure there is a dot next to the Show hidden files and folders option. If there is not a dot there, click on the option.

  1. Next, make sure there is an empty box next to the Hide file extensions for files for known file types. If there is a checkmark in this box, click on the box to remove the checkmark.

  1. Once you have made these changes, click on the OK button.

  1. A quick way to find your UNISON.INI file is to perform a search. To do this, click on Start (usually located in the bottom left corner of your screen).

  1. Click on Search, and then

  1. The Search Results window will open.

  1. Click on All Files and Folders.

  1. Under All or part of the file name: type the name of the file you are searching for: UNISON.INI.

  1. Then click on Search.

  1. The computer will display all the UNISON.INI files it has found. Make sure that the one you select is your specific UNISON.INI file.

  1. You can verify a particular UNISON.INI file is yours by double-clicking on it; this will open up the file in Notepad.
  • Look at the line that begins with OfflinePath=.
  • The rest of the line contains the offline file path that Oracle Calendar uses to store your offline files.
  • Make sure that your profile name appears in this path. (For example, this user's profile name is "rcb2.000").

  1. Directly below the line that has [GENPREFS], type the following: offlineab=false.

  1. Click on File in the toolbar. Then click on Save

  1. Congratulations! You just finished setting up Oracle Calendar to ignore your offline files.
