UIS Rapid Response Team Security Initiatives
Secure Laptop Exchange Program
Working with Confidential Data
|
What will happen during your laptop exchange appointmentThe laptop exchange process should take approximately 60 minutes. During this time, UIS staff will walk you through the data transfer process, creation of an encrypted password, the 'enrolling' of fingerprints and general introduction to your new machine. 1. Data inventory of your old laptop Prior to coming to your appointment, you assess all your existing ePI data (what is ePI data). Do not delete it. UIS staff will use various tools to scan your laptop to find any remaining ePI data, and walk you through the deletion process. They will also transfer data from your old laptop to the new one. The time required for this will vary based on the amount of data to be transferred. Once the files are copied, UIS technicians will configure your e-mail client, printers, and other personal customization as necessary. 2. Creation of an encrypted 'fingerprint' password This process should only take 5-10 minutes. On the secure laptop, you will be asked to swipe two separate fingers across the fingerprint reader for 'preboot' authentication. This means that your 'fingerprint' will be required before the laptop can even launch the operating system.
In addition to your fingerprint, you will be asked create and enter a strong, complex password (different from your NetID password) in order to give you access to the hard drive, which is now encrypted. 3. Tutorial and walk through Once the secure laptop is configured, the UIS technician will give you a mini-tutorial on the new security features, as well as answer any outstanding questions you may have. |
